This is my first week back to tracking in a LONG while and, while I definitely was only focused on consistency, not perfection, there were naturally a few hurdles to deal with. One of which includes last-minute, unexpected travel.
And, since we are about to be on the road for the weekend, I wanted to share some easy on-the-go food and snack ideas as well as options for food when you’re in a new place or just away from home.
This list will be heavily focused on road travel, but maybe I’ll get an airport specific one too…
On-the-Go Food & Snack Ideas
Pre-Cut or Handheld Fruit: Buying pre-cut or handheld fruits like mixed berries or apples from the grocery is convenient and easy to eat while travelling. There are often variations at gas stations too, depending on which ones you stop at.
Protein Shakes: Protein shakes are another great option while on the go and a great way to ensure you’re keeping your protein intake higher. I personally like the Chobani Complete options because my stomach doesn’t handle whey very well, but protein shakes are great options and can often be found in gas stations or airports.
Boiled Eggs: Another easy and common gas station option. This is an easy source of protein and micronutrients.
Sandwiches: This is a great option for a variety of reasons. They can be higher in protein (generally I do a simple turkey sandwich), you can add veggies to them, you can find them at gas stations and they can be eaten while you drive and without silverware.
Protein Bars: You can usually find these at gas stations and airports as well and can be great options. If I’m being honest, though, this is one of my last resorts because so many protein bars are loaded with unnecessary calories and often aren’t actually decent protein sources compared to the fat and carb contents. If you have the ability to plan ahead and bring your preferred one, great!
Nutrition-Friendly Restaurant Options
Now, all of the above are all great for while you’re on the road but what about when you get to your destination? Well, first, let’s consider the priority of the trip. You don’t always need to be focused on your food and you definitely should let yourself enjoy your vacations (my clients know this) BUT if you are wanting to stay more focused on your nutrition, here are some of my favorite go-to options.
Chipotle (or Chipotle Catering): their nutrition information is so readily accessible that it’s hard to not use Chipotle as an example. They have great protein options and so many ways to modify a meal to what you might want or need. Plus, they have a catering option that you can take advantage of if you just need easy meal prep or don’t have time.
Chain Steakhouses: these are a great option because their steaks often come with a side or two that you can keep simple. Order a couple meals ahead and you easily have steak and veggie focused meals to last you a day or two. They also tend to have some type of chicken or seafood option if you’d rather have that.
Seasons 52: While it’s not the cheapest, I love this option because you can dine in or order out and the food options are all delicious and relatively low calorie. Their nutrition information is clear and they have options for all dietary preferences.
I also love sandwiches on this list but for any of our gluten-intolerant or celiac friends, that’s a little trickier.
As always, when you travel consider your priorities for the trip. If it’s work travel or something unexpected, maybe consider some of these options! If it’s a vacation, let yourself enjoy it! You can always get back to your normal when you get back.
